Email marketing has existed almost since the advent of email itself, and even though it isn’t getting the same hype as recent trends like social media and SEO, it’s still one of the most powerful marketing tools out there.
For one thing, the reach that email has is unmatched by any other method of communication. And even as we develop more ways to communicate with each other, email continues to grow more popular:
- The number of email users in the US grows exponentially every year.
- eMarketer predicts that by 2017, Americans will have nearly 240 million email accounts.
- By that time the number of email users worldwide will have grown from 2.4 billion to nearly 2.8 billion.
Of course, in response to so many people communicating through email, technology is continuing to make it more accessible. Mobile access to email is commonplace now, and recent advances have us looking forward to email on our smart watches, Google Glass, and more.
Still growing
Knowing all of this, it’s obvious why email marketing is a force to be reckoned with. The value of getting your business right in front of your potential clients’ eyes via computer screen, smart phone, tablet, and more cannot be overstated. Not using this still-expanding communication method to your advantage would be a huge mistake.
And today’s marketers know it: The DMA reported that 75.8% of marketers are using more email marketing for their business than they were just three years ago. And it’s still growing. Forrester Research predicts that email marketing spending will reach $2 billion nationwide in 2014.
Oldie but a goodie
Luckily for marketers, the same basic principles of email marketing continue to apply and remain effective, regardless of how the marketing world has changed:
- Content should offer value.
- Personalized and targeted content is more effective.
- A Call to Action (CTA) is must-have lead generation tool.
- Reporting and analysis of results will guide future efforts.
Email marketing may have been around for a while, but that shouldn’t make you ignore it. Some things stick around because they are effective tools that function consistently. Email marketing isn’t going anywhere — and it’s only getting more relevant over time.
