Which Marketing Channel Has the Best ROI?

Luckily for content marketers, it’s pretty easy to calculate those numbers and figure out which methods have the highest ROI and therefore are the most important to our marketing programs.

So which content distribution channel has the best ROI? That’s an easy one: email.

According to Econsultancy’s Email Marketing Industry Census 2014, 68% of marketers rated email as having “good” or “excellent” ROI, more approval than any other marketing channel garnered. It was ranked overall as the best marketing channel for ROI. But you don’t have to rely on what marketers think has the best ROI, because the numbers back them up:

  • The amount of total sales attributed to email rose 28% just in the last year.
  • That means email doesn’t just clean up on the ROI front — it’s getting even better.
  • Nearly a quarter of respondents (24%) attribute more than 30% of their total sales to email marketing.

And Econsultancy’s census isn’t alone in singing email marketing’s praises: Juliette Kopecky of Hubspot did the math on one company’s numbers for direct mail vs. email ROI as an example, and ended up with some pretty extreme results.

For every dollar spent on email marketing, Kopecky calculated a $2,600 return. Guess what the per-dollar return on direct mail was? Hint: Cut two digits off of the previous number. That’s right, direct mail returned only $27 per dollar spent. Take that math a little further and you’ll find that in this specific case, email marketing no less than 95 times the ROI of direct mail.

Despite these numbers, the average company is still spending just 16% of its marketing budget on email marketing. Can you imagine how ROI could skyrocket if you gave email marketing the attention it deserves?
