When it comes to building things, Jeff Moore, Director of Operations for
AFT's Composites Division
has plenty of experience. A former construction worker who spent many years in the construction industry before deciding to get a degree in engineering, Mr. Moore has helped build AFT's composites business and make it a worldwide leader in metal matrix technologies.
Born and raised in Iowa, Mr. Moore received a BS in Manufacturing Engineering from Iowa State University and immediately went to work in research and development for the university and Ames Laboratories.
"I was at Iowa State and Ames Laboratories doing R & D for manufacturing and consolidating particulate materials for five years," he said. "Several of the programs I was involved with utilized metal injection molding (MIM) technology. When my funding at the university was cut, I applied to AFT—and I haven't looked back."
In fact, like any builder, he's been looking upward ever since joining
AFT
in October 1995. Starting in process engineering and working primarily with sintering, Mr. Moore's primary responsibilities involved equipment purchases, design improvements and process improvements. Showing skills as a problem solver, he rose up through the company over the years to his current position. In the process, he has helped AFT Composites Group develop solutions that are novel and unique, producing products that perform at the cutting edge of technology. However, as he is quick to point out, new technologies can create new problems as well.
"While producing products that are at the leading edge of technology is very rewarding, it is sometimes frustrating," Mr. Moore said. "The challenges can surprise you. The main thing is to maintain a ‘can-do' attitude. Working to solve a problem for the customer is easier with a dedicated, hard-working team like we have."
When Mr. Moore's not busy building
AFT's composites
business, he's likely in his home workshop building furniture, busy with various woodworking projects, or working in the garden. Looking to the future, he is enthusiastic about his team and sees much opportunity for AFT to grow.
"We're designing solutions that are novel and unique," he said. "I think AFT will continue to grow at present rates, expand capabilities and markets and be the worldwide leader in our technologies."
